Evelyn Glennie

Evelyn at the Guggenheim museum

This morning there was a very impressive film on the tv with Evelyn Glennie “Touch the sound”. She’s a percussionist and composer, has a hearing disability (she is almost completely deaf) and has made this sound journey with Thomas Riedelsheimer. It shows that “hearing” is something that can be done with ones whole body. Other senses have compensated her hearing disability. When I was a pianoteacher I already knew and read about her, and about her dazzling performances. She’s very famous and has made a lot of recordings. Somehow I never bought a cd of her. So this was a little present today. Such a powerful person, I always thought it is incredible how she can be such a good percussionist, without being able to hear. After seeing the film, I thought:”She can hear more than an average person”. I was very impressed to see her on the screen, she made me listen in quite another way during that hour. The images and the way they “filmed sound” was also a luxury for the eyes and ears. “The most intense and impressive sound you’ll ever hear is silence” she said.
